Gel vs acrylic nails: which should you get?

Both are applied over your natural nail and set into a hard finish. The difference is what they're made of, how they feel and how they wear — in short, gel looks more natural and feels lighter, acrylic is tougher and usually cheaper.

What is gel?

Gel is a thick liquid that's painted on and then set hard under a UV or LED lamp. It stays a little flexible, so it bends with your natural nail instead of snapping — which is why it feels lighter and looks more natural. It's a popular choice if you want a clean, everyday finish.

Gel flexes with the natural nail, so the finish stays glossy and close to your own.

What is acrylic?

Acrylic is made by mixing a powder and a liquid into a paste that hardens in the air. It sets very strong and rigid, so it's great for adding length or a bold shape. The trade-off is that it can feel heavier, and the application has a strong smell.

How to choose

Choose gel

If you want a natural, lightweight look and mostly normal-length nails.

Choose acrylic

If you want extra length, a strong shape like coffin or stiletto, or you're hard on your hands.

If you bite your nails or they break easily, acrylic's extra strength can help them grow out.

Removal matters more than people think

Both gel and acrylic should be soaked off or gently filed down by a technician — never peeled or picked off. Peeling takes a layer of your real nail with it, which is what actually causes the damage people blame on extensions. If you look after removal, your natural nails stay healthy.

Common questions

Which lasts longer, gel or acrylic?
Acrylic is slightly more durable and usually goes a little longer between refills, but both need a fill every 2–3 weeks as your nail grows out.
Which is better for weak or short nails?
Acrylic adds the most strength, so it's often better if your nails break easily or you want length. Gel is gentler and more natural if your nails are in decent shape.
Do gel or acrylic nails damage your natural nails?
Not if they're removed properly. The damage almost always comes from peeling them off at home — always get them soaked off or filed down by a technician.
Can you switch between gel and acrylic?
Yes. Just have one fully removed before the other is applied, rather than layering one over the other.
How often do I need a refill?
Every 2–3 weeks for most people, as the gap at the base grows out. Leaving it too long makes them more likely to lift or snap.
