Tattoo styles explained

A tattoo "style" is the visual language an artist works in — like fine-line, realism, or traditional. Most artists are great at one or two styles, not all of them. So if you decide on the style you want first, it's much easier to find the right artist for it.

You don't need to memorise these — just notice which ones you keep saving. That tells you the kind of artist to look for.

How to spot a skilled tattoo artist

Whatever the style, a few things separate great work from risky work. This is what to look for when you go through an artist's photos.

Good signs

  • Solid, even lines — no wobble or patchy bits
  • Smooth, clean shading and colour that fills evenly
  • Healed photos that look as crisp as fresh ones (always ask to see healed work)
  • A clean studio, fresh gloves, and needles opened in front of you
  • A portfolio focused on the style you actually want

Warning signs

  • Shaky or uneven lines
  • "Blowouts" — ink that has spread into a blur under the skin
  • Only fresh photos, never healed ones
  • A general portfolio with no real depth in your style

Pick the style first, then the artist

The biggest mistake is choosing an artist by price or location and hoping they can do your idea. Decide on the style, then find someone whose healed work in that style is excellent. A fine-line specialist and a realism specialist are almost different jobs.

Find a tattoo studio in Bangalore

A tattoo is permanent, so the artist matters more than anything. Meilo ranks studios by the quality of their actual work — not ads or follower counts — so you can compare real, healed results before you book.

Before you book

Which tattoo style is best for a first tattoo?
Fine-line and small traditional pieces are popular first tattoos — they're simpler, quicker, and easier to place discreetly. Pick a style you genuinely like, then find a specialist in it.
Which tattoo styles age the best?
Traditional and bold blackwork tend to age very well because the lines are thick and solid. Very fine or very light work can soften over the years and may need a touch-up.
Can one artist do every style?
Rarely well. Most artists specialise in one or two styles. Always judge an artist by their work in the exact style you want.
What is a fine-line tattoo?
A tattoo made of thin, delicate lines with little or no shading. It suits small, detailed and subtle designs, and needs a steady, experienced hand.
Do detailed styles cost more?
Yes. Realism, fine-line and large blackwork take more time and skill, so they cost more than a small, simple design.
